The Idea of Home Follows Me Wherever I Go
Artist Statement
This body of work aesthetically and conceptually reexamines the landscape genre of photography from an immigrant and feminist perspective. And it serves as a way of renegotiating the possibility of home, within the context of shifting criteria determining who does and who does not belong to the American land. The title of this project comes from a quote by Zarina, a modern, minimalist, abstract artist of Indian origin. As with Zarina’s work, my own creative practice and my proposed project mine the trajectory of my personal life to consider how land can be a site for belonging, permanency, fragility, refuge, temporariness and trauma, all at once.
